I wrote an article last week about the famine in Gaza caused by the siege and the Israeli aggression against the sector, and its arbitrary denial of aid. I compared the dire situation in Gaza and the hunger that is afflicting its people to the Great Famine that occurred in Egypt during the Fatimid era. Some jealous individuals criticized the article, arguing that it was just empty words that wouldn't solve anything, and that Gaza needed action, not just talk. This prompted me to want to address this perspective in more detail and with greater clarity, not in response to the criticism, but because it is a worthy topic to discuss and debate, and it is particularly important, especially after such a long period of crisis.Given the lack of practical solutions among Arab and Muslim peoples, it was natural for a general sense of frustration to prevail, stemming from the feeling of helplessness in supporting our people in Gaza. This led some to withdraw and dampen the enthusiasm that had been ignited in people's hearts since the beginning of the Israeli aggression. This is exactly what the Israeli enemy wants: for us to lose hope in discussing and addressing the issue, and to diminish the importance of words spoken about the events and suffering in Gaza.Indeed, practical solutions are the foundation upon which we base our work, exploring their mechanisms and methods. However, the word also plays a crucial role that should not be underestimated. The word that shaped global public opinion against Israel's aggression in Gaza. The word itself revealed the falseness of the victimhood narrative of the occupation, which was being promoted with the help of Western media, because it was living in a brutal Arab environment. The statement clarifies that opposing Zionism and the brutal Israeli occupation does not mean hating Jews, as Zionists promote.felt&– and that our brothers in Gaza are suffering from grief, oppression, and helplessness, and that we are unable to help them.It was the word that created the momentum, leading to the introduction of some aid, even though it was minimal, given the complicity of the occupation and the Americans in starving the people of Gaza. The word has prompted people to think about practical solutions, and a recent innovative method for delivering humanitarian aid to the people of the sector through coastal cities has emerged, involving filling plastic bottles with pulses and grains such as lentils and rice, and throwing them into the sea, in the hope that the current will carry them to the shores of Gaza, where people will collect them. Although this is an unreliable method, it reflects the public's engagement and their desire to find practical solutions to support the people of Gaza.By continuing to discuss Gaza and its crisis, we send a message to the supporters and backers of the occupation about the level of anger and frustration among Arab and Muslim communities. This creates the conditions for an explosion that Western imperialist powers fear. The issue keeps the Gaza issue and the Palestinian issue alive, ensuring that it remains a central concern for every Arab and Muslim. The word helps us preserve our humanity, so that we don't live in this painful separation between our personal lives and the nation's turbulent crises. The word is measured by the Arab and Islamic public opinion regarding the events in Gaza, as it reflects the sentiments of the people, which is of great importance to decision-makers both domestically and internationally. Finally, the word "apology to God" is the only recourse, as few others remain. If the hand is restrained, then at least a written or spoken word should be offered, which is the minimum effort required.Nor does it imply a call to engage in discussion and theorizing, or to consider it the highest priority. Nor does it imply a call to accept limiting oneself to words, but rather to avoid minimizing the ongoing discussion about the Gaza issue, and to close the door to sitting idly and isolating oneself from it, under the pretext that there are no practical solutions to support and help the residents of the affected sector.
Sunday 27 Jul 2025Historians mention that a woman from Cairo during the Fatimid Caliph al-Mustansir, when the Nile's waters dried up, took a necklace worth a thousand dinars and bought wheat flour with it, giving some to the person who protected her from thieves. When she arrived at her house, they took it from her, and people swarmed around and stole it. She also took some with them, kneaded and baked it into bread, and then took it to the Caliph's palace, shouting at the top of her voice: &"Oh people of Cairo, pray for our beloved Imam al-Mustansir, whose days have brought joy to people, and whose blessings have been returned upon them, so that I may obtain this valuable prize for 1000 dinars."»It is one of the most tragic historical scenes, in an era that defies human comprehension, known as the "Stannous Crisis" in the 5th Hijri century. The Nile's water level receded, crops were destroyed, and the people of Egypt suffered from famine, with a third of them dying. Houses were sold to obtain flour, and people ate cats and dogs. Even more horrifyingly, this era witnessed accounts of cannibalism. It is natural to recall this tragedy in the age of the internet and live streaming, the famine that struck the besieged Gaza Strip, which&– Due to the prolonged devastation, killing, and siege, he no longer asks when the war will end, but rather: when will I get a loaf of bread?Believe it or not, this is the first phrase people in Gaza are using to communicate:&"Did you eat anything today?"&"Initially, the large crowds stood for hours in queues to obtain cans and food provided through aid, and they jostled for the limited rations that provided sustenance."However, with the prolonged siege and the occupation's arbitrary actions and collusion with the White House, all crossings were closed, and all humanitarian organizations involved in distributing food to the residents of the sector were excluded. The dubious American-affiliated Al-Gaza Foundation was designated as the sole entity responsible for distributing aid, and its focus was limited to specific areas in the south, in order to force the residents of the north to flee or starve to death. The worst part was that the brutal Israeli enemy was shooting at those waiting for aid, forcing people to risk their lives in order to obtain a bag of flour. The hunger in Gaza has reached an unprecedented level. The greatest hope for people is to obtain a bag of flour to bake bread, bread alone. People have forgotten what meat, vegetables, and fruits look like.I remembered the severity of the famine in Al-Nahda, due to the similarity of some events and occurrences in Gaza, where people were dying of hunger, eating tree leaves, and there was very little flour available, only at exorbitant prices that ordinary people could not afford. The Palestinian journalist, Bashir Abu Shaer, showed off the camera, which was his main source of income, for sale in exchange for a bag of flour in order to feed his children.People in Gaza were eating animal feed, ground and baked, as a substitute for flour, but it quickly ran out.During the severe siege of Gaza, people ate cats and dogs, but the situation in Gaza was even worse. The animals themselves shared the hunger of the Gazans, and shared their deaths from starvation. Corpses of dead animals were scattered throughout the streets, as animals that had not found food lay dying. Those that remained alive were feeding on the dead animals. Worse still, they were devouring the decomposing bodies of Palestinians who had been killed by indiscriminate shelling, and their bodies had not been buried. Witnesses reported this.Children and infants are dying, mothers' breasts are empty due to starvation, and bellies remain hollow for three to four days until people become weak and suffer from acute anemia and a weakened immune system. Even the water is not safe to drink, leading to the appearance of countless diseases.Gaza is facing a dire humanitarian crisis, with all the accompanying horrors of starvation, violence, and destruction. If we fail to act to save its people from this,Fill the horizons with your voices about the famine in Gaza, never tire, never give up, so that it gains the momentum needed to move the frozen decision of the Arab world towards providing the necessary aid to save the people of Gaza.It is shameful that our ambitions have been reduced to feeding the hungry and saving them from starvation, rather than stopping the war. But what can be done when death has become their preferred fate over starvation, in the face of international conspiracy and Arab betrayal.
