From firefighter to builder

On one of the summer nights, the alarm sounded in the main building of the company. Everyone rushed to find the source of the fire, while the manager, as usual, was among the first to arrive, carrying a fire hose in one hand and a phone in the other, shouting instructions in all directions. He managed to control the crisis, but he emerged from the building, drenched in sweat and smoke, surrounded by admiring and compassionate glances. At that moment, one of the employees whispered:&"How long will we continue to wait until the fires break out to force everyone to take action?"»That moment was a turning point. The manager realized that his firefighting skills couldn't prevent the fires, and that his organization was trapped in a cycle of crises that were draining its resources day after day. He then decided to transition from a firefighting manager to a builder, creating systems that prevented fires instead of just fighting them. Many managers like to be described as&Problem solvers» They intervene quickly, resolve crises, and handle any emergency. One of the things most often said about some of them is:&"So-and-so never sleeps, always in the heart of the action."&"… but is this praise or a warning? And what makes a successful manager: the one who chases the fire… or the one who prevents it from starting?"In modern management, the manager is viewed as&Firefighting&"Therefore, the failure is not a series of successive crises, but rather a system of anticipation, planning, and construction. The true manager is not the one who simply reacts to crises, but the one who anticipates them and prevents them from occurring in the first place."The firefighting manager operates reactively, prides himself on quick response, but is actually bogged down in details, exhausted, distracted, and limited in scope. In contrast, the effective manager has the time to think, the team to execute, and the system that works even when he's not there. An organization that relies on a single leader to handle crises is a fragile one, as its stability depends solely on the presence of that individual. In contrast, an organization that is managed according to intelligent systems, alternative plans, and a conscious team, thrives and prospers, regardless of who leads it today. The effective manager focuses on developing systems, not just fixing vulnerabilities; empowering the team, not monopolizing solutions; documenting procedures, not improvising decisions; and building a corporate culture that addresses root causes before results. In contrast, the fire chief constantly jumps from one crisis to another, racing against the clock. His value is tied to the number of tasks he completes, rather than the quality of the results, creating institutions that rely on him but do not develop after his departure.Transitioning from firefighting to construction is not easy, and it begins first with redefining success. Success is not in&Continuous intervention»، but in&Safe absence&"A successful manager is one who makes their presence important, but not necessary, at every moment."And let us always remember that the true hero in management is not the one who appears in every scene, but the one who sometimes disappears... because everything is running smoothly.
