Syria is currently at a dangerous crossroads, amidst the ongoing conflicts, which the Israeli entity has exploited to attack Damascus and create an additional front, taking over the resistance alongside the fronts in Lebanon, Yemen, and Iraq, which support Palestine and condemn the genocide in Gaza, where clashes continue in Suwayda despite the declaration of a ceasefire. The National Hospital is out of service. Clashes have renewed in Suwayda, southern Syria, following the violation of the ceasefire agreement, coinciding with the ongoing displacement from within the city of Suwayda towards the eastern countryside of Daraa. A correspondent for Al Mayadin in Syria reported on Wednesday that the ceasefire agreement in Suwayda, southern Syria,&"Not implemented"&"adding that"&"Clashes continue at an escalating pace, and fighting has resumed in Sweida following violations by armed groups after a ceasefire agreement," according to a statement by the Ministry of Defense's media and communications department in the Syrian interim government. The ministry also stated that the army continues to respond to sources of fire in accordance with the rules of engagement, amid the ongoing displacement of civilians and the presence of the Israeli occupation forces in the city's airspace. The Syrian Ministry of Defense also stated that&"Illegal armed groups have resumed attacks on military and internal security forces."&"This followed the signing of a truce agreement with the city's notables and elders. The ministry's statement said:&"We had previously affirmed the right of the army to respond to sources of the insurgency and called on the Ministry of Civil Defense to..."&"Commitment to their homes"&"… and reporting on remaining illegal elements within the city, local Syrian sources reported that the National Hospital in Suwayda is currently out of service due to the siege it is under, and the medical staff are appealing for help.&"Intervention after he was surrounded by heavy machinery and deprived of electricity, water, and food."&"Demanding the transfer of patients and injured individuals to other medical facilities from hospitals and clinics in the governorate, and Syrian media reported that the displacement continues from within the city of Suwayda towards the eastern countryside of Daraa, in order to escape armed clashes. Reports also indicate the presence of Israeli occupation aircraft in the airspace of Suwayda, without reports of direct strikes targeting sensitive military facilities and residential buildings, under the pretext of defending the Druze community, considering the Druze..."&Allies&"And this is not new, as photos of Syrian Orthodox Christians embracing the founder of the Israeli entity (David Ben-Gurion) in 1958 have been circulating for years!" &The southern Syrian city of Suwayda and Daraa witnessed a significant escalation in military activity on Tuesday and Wednesday, coinciding with unprecedented internal tensions between the transitional government in Damascus and the religious authorities of the Jabal al-Arab. Clashes broke out in Suwayda and its surrounding areas between Druze fighters and Bedouin tribes and armed forces loyal to the Syrian Defense Ministry. These clashes, which are ongoing, have resulted in numerous casualties, the number and identities of whom are difficult to ascertain amidst the chaotic situation of gunfire from all directions, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. We may also ask about the position of the State of Qatar on the events in Syria and their local and regional repercussions. Qatar, under the leadership of its Emir, is directing its foreign policy to ensure that the region avoids the ravages of violence and the specter of civil war. We must also remember that Qatar has consistently maintained its position in recognizing the legitimacy of the Assad regime before its overthrow and condemning the brutal practices of the Assad regime, which responded to peaceful demonstrations with violence and demanded only more freedoms and civil rights as part of the Arab Spring. In this context, the Qatari Emiri Diwan announced in mid-July that the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, had held a phone call with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, during which he affirmed Qatar's firm stance in supporting the unity of Syria and the integrity of its territory. The statement also said that the Emir of Qatar strongly condemned the attacks carried out by the occupation forces on Syrian territory, describing them as a blatant violation of Syrian sovereignty and a clear violation of the UN Charter, and a direct threat to the security and stability of the region. For his part, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad expressed his gratitude to the Emir of Qatar for this position, praising Doha's role in supporting Syria and promoting regional security. For the readers' information, Qatar was the first country to recognize the new legitimacy of Syria, and it received the first major Qatari official following the escape of the dictator to Moscow, leaving behind a mountain of problems, including blackmailing the Syrian people with sectarian divisions and fueling inter-communal strife that had previously coexisted in peace under the Syrian flag. We fear for Syria as a homeland, a history, and a strategic location in the Islamic East, that the respected President Bashar al-Assad will fall into the trap of cooperation prepared by hostile Arab and Muslim forces, with the occupation state at the forefront, which threatens the stability of Syria and its return with strength, free from the dominance of the occupying entity and its evil schemes to continue the genocide war and use starvation as a weapon of war. &And Al Jazeera channel daily presents us with the images of the children martyrs, their faces on plates they brought to take a bite! And we see today how the enemies of Syria are uniting.&"Exaggerating the role of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham"&"…in a sinister plan aimed at reminding the West that the organization was classified as…"&"Terrorist organization"». In this tense atmosphere, Qatari diplomacy remains committed to its mission of bridging the gap between Syria and a path to security. Last Sunday, the government of the legitimate authorities successfully signed a comprehensive ceasefire agreement with representatives of the people of Suwayda, followed by the deployment of Syrian army and security forces throughout Suwayda and securing all roads leading to it. Qatari diplomacy also continued its mediation in the Congo crisis, where an agreement was signed in Doha between the government of the Congo and the 23 March movement, which has been fighting the Congolese government for 30 years. Through this successful mediation, Qatar extinguished the spark of violence that threatened the heart of Africa, a continent in need of security, peace, and development.
Friday 25 Jul 2025During one of my visits to the Doha International Book Fair, I heard the voices of young people calling my name, coming from a government office affiliated with the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers of Qatar. I responded to their call, and when I met them, I was surprised to learn that a group of my former students still remembered me, despite the years that had passed and the graying of my hair, which had changed my appearance. I felt a rare sense of happiness at the level of appreciation shown by those who had studied with me at Qatar University, and I was proud and honored by these righteous students and their professor. They invited me and offered me green tea and dates, and then each of them insisted on reminding me of one of my lectures or a piece of wisdom that they had memorized from their university days. They all confirmed that my method of conveying information to them was inspired by my experiences in journalism and life, and that I did not simply dictate texts from books to them. These fleeting moments of time were among the happiest moments of my life in the country where I had lived for a third of a century. It became my first country, not just my second. They also gave me a large book containing 650 pages with beautiful printing and layout, bound in a distinctive deep-purple color, which encourages you to browse it. The book is titled "Achievements of the State of Qatar 2023-2024". I would like to briefly review some of its contents: The book is divided into ministries, each of which provides a summary of its achievements in its field of specialization. It begins with the Ministry of Interior, which emphasizes its efforts in security matters and Qatar's ranking in security indicators. Then comes the fact that Qatar is the leading Arab country, with mention of international awards and medals, and emphasis on the awareness of citizens and residents of the need to participate in maintaining security. Following this is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which is responsible for representing the country and protecting its interests, promoting its human and cultural values, and signing agreements and interacting with Gulf, regional, and international organizations. The Ministry also focused on digitizing transactions in all its departments and embassies to facilitate people's lives and to qualify Qatari youth to take on diplomatic responsibilities and oversee the mediation efforts that Qatar undertakes in various crisis and conflict situations, with the aim of establishing peace and avoiding war and violence. Following this is QatarEnergy, including research and exploration, while maintaining production rates from the North Field for gas and developing the industry through increased production. Then comes the Ministry of Finance, which oversees the sector and the work of banks and the collection and distribution of revenues in the state's annual budget. This is followed by the Ministry of Finance and Economy, which announces that it is responsible for directing the state's financial policies and reviewing legislation, updating some of it, and taking the necessary measures to enact customs laws, as well as developing the state's accounting and supervisory policies and combating smuggling and tax evasion and money laundering, all of which support the interests of the Qatari people and protect their security. As for the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, we find a wealth of achievements, as the ministry oversees commercial and industrial activity and directs it to meet the requirements of national development, and provides all the facilities for export and supply activities, including proposing laws to the Shura Council that facilitate the transactions of exporters and suppliers, which serves to protect consumers and provide markets with the goods needed throughout the year. The book also includes the activities of the Qatar Central Bank, which works to achieve the state's economic objectives without conflicting with the stability of the Rial and the stability of other currencies, and oversees all banks in the country. The book also includes the achievements of the Supreme Council for Regulation and Transparency, which works to ensure the highest standards of integrity, combat corruption, and monitor the implementation of agreements signed between Qatari and external parties. In the Ministry of Culture file, we find that it oversees all cultural and artistic fields, preserves cultural heritage, and supervises museums, libraries, and provides laws related to audio, visual, written, and digital media, as well as the publishing sector, in order to create a conducive environment for culture and support the establishment of cultural clubs and encourage talented individuals. In the Ministry of Labor file, we discover the nature of the Ministry's work, which supervises all decisions and laws regulating agreements between Qatar and other countries to regulate the foreign workforce and ensure their rights, while creating a healthy and safe working environment. The Ministry also seeks to digitize all its transactions in both the private and public sectors. We arrive at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, which seeks to improve the level of education and meet the needs of the state for qualified personnel. The book also highlights the efforts of the Qatar Education and Culture Development Institute, which complements the Ministry's goals thanks to the efforts of Her Excellency Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, which have been ongoing for over three decades. In the Ministry of Justice file, we find a description of the Ministry's work in defending the state's rights in all disputes, both domestic and international, and monitoring the legal profession, which requires specific laws and regulations. With the Ministry completing its strategic plan for the justice sector for 2024-2030, and establishing links between the Ministry and the Supreme Council for Justice, and developing a comprehensive training program for legal personnel on new legislation, and ensuring that the Ministry's offices are located outside the Ministry building to provide services to people wherever they are. We arrive at the achievements of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, and we realize that the ministry is working to improve the efficiency of technology and its specialists, so that this sector can serve the national development process and benefit the future of the Qatari people, who are ahead of others in this field thanks to these efforts. It is worth noting that the ministry has achieved 100% coverage of all areas of the country with the government's communication network, while it has also effectively combated all cyberattacks and digital piracy. As for the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, we learn about the ministry's major goals in spreading the Islamic call and culture, and developing religious and moral awareness from childhood to all stages of life, while supervising mosques and their imams and those working on their daily maintenance, in addition to publishing the "Book of the Nation," which has been in its 40th year and has been distributed at symbolic prices to most Arab and Muslim peoples. The book is published monthly in a concise and easy format. These are just some of the virtues of the book, and they are a reflection of the virtues of the Qatari state, which excels in all fields. We can only pray to His Highness, the Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad, the leader of the state's civilization, and to His Highness, the late Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa, who established a modern state with high principles and modern institutions, which His Highness, Sheikh Tamim, may God preserve him, has maintained.
