It seems that the ability to think flexibly, which involves objectively presenting alternatives, suggestions, insights, and ideas related to a particular topic, is a subject of discussion. This, in turn, leads to making more informed decisions, which involves examining both the positive and negative aspects, as well as personal feelings and impressions, in addition to elements of neutrality, creativity, and out-of-the-box thinking. All of this is done under the careful management of this diverse range of thinking styles, or, more specifically, through wearing a hat of a specific color that symbolically represents each particular thinking style, with all its strengths and weaknesses. This is precisely what the book refers to in its title, "The Six Thinking Hats."The concept of "lateral thinking" is presented as a professional method for creativity (Dr. Edward de Bono, 1933: 2021), a Maltese doctor and psychologist who held positions at prestigious universities such as Oxford and Harvard, and authored more than fifty books in this field, in addition to managing direct teaching programs on thinking in schools around the world, as well as designing flexible tools for the thinking process and its practical applications in major global institutions. While he considers thinking to be the ultimate resource of human potential, he seeks to improve human skills rather than simply maintaining a good level, especially since he views this complacency as a sign of a declining level of thinking, in which humans aim to prove that they are right, regardless of the circumstances, in order to satisfy their own ego! However, this self-satisfaction requires confronting the confusion that arises from the difficulties associated with the thinking process itself, or rather, the confusion that usually results from trying to accomplish multiple tasks at once, where the forces of logic and emotions clash, along with the imagination, the urge to anticipate, and the sources of hope.&"The Six Thinking Hats"» to separate them all, by encouraging the wearing of only one hat in a specific situation, or, as Dr. Bono puts it:&"Having six different modes of thinking at the individual level will allow us to guide our thinking in the same way a conductor guides an orchestra, allowing us to call upon what we want - from now on."»What is this color code? Since Dr. Bono combines these six colors into three, he considers (white and red) to represent neutrality and emotion, (black and yellow) to represent negativity and positivity, and (green and blue) to represent creativity and order. He presents them according to this concept by saying:&"The White Hat: White is considered neutral and objective, so this hat was associated with facts, objectivity, shapes, and illustrations."The Red Hat: The color red suggests anger, annoyance, and intense emotions. Therefore, the purpose of this hat is to provide an unreasoned emotional perspective.Black hat: Black is a negative color; therefore, the black hat will cover the negative aspects. The yellow hat: Yellow is the color of sunshine and positivity; therefore, the yellow hat is a cheerful hat that covers hopes and focuses on the positive aspects. The Green Hat: Green is the color of agriculture, abundant and fruitful growth, and vegetative reproduction; therefore, this hat symbolizes creativity and new ideas. The blue hat: Blue is a cool color, and it is the color of the sky, which is above everything else. Therefore, the blue hat is associated with control and organization of thinking processes, and the use of other hats. It ensures that one hat does not overshadow the other.»In discussing each hat and its specific color, Dr. Bono addressed the need to rationalize information requests, distinguished between opinion and belief, and differentiated between truth and falsehood. He then moved on to preparing a comprehensive thought map in the (red hat), which naturally leads to the decision-making stage, specifying the location of (intuition) within this hat's space, and explaining the possibility of changing emotions through the pattern of thinking associated with it! In the (black hat), he distinguished between the method of thinking and its subject matter, linking this hat to the process of criticism, pointing to the process of finding logical negatives, and warning against being immersed in a negative perspective. He also included the constructive thinking pattern under the (yellow hat), and emphasized the distinction between construction and creativity while wearing it. Finally, in the (green hat), he addressed lateral thinking, as a means of stimulating mental activity and encouraging creative thinking. He also designated the (blue hat) as the "maestro" of this thinking system, regarding the design of the appropriate thinking program, and the continuity of tasks of focus, control, and follow-up.Dr. Bono concludes his book by emphasizing that the purpose of the concept is&"The Six Thinking Hats"&"It is defined in two ways: first, simplifying the thinking process by enabling each individual to deal with different thinking styles in a separate and specific way, without confusion between them; and second, flexibility in the thinking process by enabling each individual to call upon different thinking styles instead of adhering to a single style."
Thursday 24 Jul 2025He is a writer of the "reader-writer" type, a reader and writer both before and after, who has never truly escaped the confines of reading. He constantly seeks to understand the whims of reality and the nuances of consciousness and mood, but always returns to the act of reading. In his book, "The Joys of Reading and the Agonies of Writing," he details his journey, which continues on the path of writing alongside reading. He learned to write through writing, not through formal education, creative writing workshops, or the simplistic, promotional "Seven Days of Writing" curriculum. In his view, writing is a complete system of standards, combining innate aptitude, a present-minded mind, a patient personality, diligent and purposeful reading, rigorous and endless writing exercises, and sacrifices willingly made from the pleasures of material life. While the writer believes that the capacity for reading can be matched by the capacity for writing in all its forms and fields, he does not guarantee that he will achieve a level of knowledge that will allow him to acknowledge the depth of his own ignorance, which is filled with questions that arise as his knowledge grows. These questions stimulate creative thinking, a dialectical mind, and serious reading, which do not allow him to take anything for granted, but instead provoke doubt, suspicion, and confusion, challenge his existing beliefs, and force him to re-examine them with a critical and discerning eye, constantly. It is therefore no surprise that the writer classifies his book as "A Chapter from the Life of a Writer," as he states in its subtitle, and as the most valuable experience of his life, as he writes in its introduction. As for him, he is (Dr. Abdul Jabar Al-Rafaei, 1954), an Iraqi intellectual and university professor who obtained a doctorate in Islamic philosophy, specializing in Islamic theology and philosophy of religion. He then authored a number of works focused on the renewal of religious discourse, and has received numerous local, Arab, and international awards. In his view, the reader gains experience after wandering through the world of books, and only selects what reinforces the knowledge he has built for himself, with awareness and understanding. He no longer falls for catchy titles, but rather, they no longer attract him with cheap seduction, as they are empty of any real benefit! He says about the topic of "random reading":&"Books that deceive readers and distort their understanding are dangerous. The variety of titles and their different content does not necessarily reflect a rich and diverse selection. Sometimes, the abundance of titles simply leads to repetition of empty and meaningless words."‎ creating a clear image of what one desires, rather than relying on eloquent language. Rarely do we encounter those who possess the talent of reconstructing words and arranging them in a captivating architectural form. Our society is characterized by a superficiality of language, and for too long, language has been reduced to meaningless, empty words that waste the reader's time and distort their understanding.»And in the topic of "Every time a library burned, something of the world's light went out," after presenting his personal experience of losing his library, not once, but repeatedly, including one caused by arson with significant motives, the author also discusses the Arab heritage, which has witnessed over the centuries, massacres, destruction, flooding, and retaliatory fires that have resulted in priceless books! From Hulagu and the machine of destruction that led to the destruction of the precious libraries of Baghdad, to the fires in the libraries of Andalusia after the fall of its last stronghold in Granada, to other mechanisms of destruction adopted by Islamic factions in their attacks on each other, and the deliberate erasure of the achievements of the defeated faction by the victorious faction, as narrated by the victors!&"The joy of finding a forbidden book after years of searching, a joy known only to book lovers. In an era of the absence of censorship and the abundance of both printed and electronic books, the reader loses this strange and unique joy of finding a book after a long period of searching."»Then he adds salt to the traditional reader's wound, who has long been accustomed to reading printed books and who has been alienated by the digital revolution, which has automated aspects of life with a single button press. The author speaks about the topic of "Writing in the Age of the Internet" from a more realistic and harsh perspective than the romantic reader! He says:&"Nothing protects us from the encroachment of writing and e-books, and we cannot stop the torrent of the internet that engulfs everything in our lives. In the homes of writers, books are often scattered chaotically in their rooms and courtyards, and those who love paper seem to be listening to a symphony that fills them with tenderness and tranquility. The act of writing itself is a calming influence."‎ Only those who are passionate about paper can truly appreciate it. They treat it as a close friend, dispelling the loneliness of their isolation and reducing their depression. It is a confidant, a source of comfort, and a companion, offering them a space to share their innermost thoughts and feelings with. It is a light that illuminates their minds, revealing insights that they would not otherwise have. It is a place of respite, where they can escape the boredom and monotony of their lives and break free from the cycle of repetition. In this space, they can engage in meaningful conversations with the book, learning from it and sharing their own thoughts and experiences. The book listens to them, responds to them, and challenges them, while they, in turn, listen to and engage with it. It is a relationship of mutual respect and understanding, where both parties are able to grow and learn from each other.»
