Building a strategy that bends instead of breaking

The Mysem team

A detailed five-year plan is out of date before the ink dries. Flexibility does not mean having no plan; it means a plan that knows in advance how it will change.

Many organisations have learned in recent years that predicting the future precisely is impossible. Yet they still need a clear direction to align their efforts. The answer is not to abandon planning but to change its shape: clarity about the goal, flexibility about the route.

Fix the goal, move the means

Start by stating, in a sentence or two, what the organisation wants to be for its customers in a few years. That goal stays fixed. Initiatives and projects are reviewed every quarter in the light of what you have learned, and stopping one that is not working is allowed without being called a failure.

Think in scenarios, not a single number

Instead of one forecast for revenue or demand, set out three scenarios — cautious, expected and optimistic — and decide the early signals that tell you which one is unfolding. Adjusting then becomes a decision thought through in advance, not a hasty reaction.

Keep decisions close to the front line

Teams closest to customers see change first. Give them clear authority within agreed limits, and make sure information reaches them quickly. A flexible strategy lives in the team's daily decisions, not in a document on a shelf.

Flexibility is a skill built through practice, and every honest quarterly review makes the organisation a little faster next time.
